- Single Scalable Management Tool
- Full Disaster Recovery
- Simple Procurement Route
Case Study Introduction
Customer Summary
A multinational insurance company that serves over 33 million customers worldwide and employs over 29,000 people.
After working with this customer on many other projects since 2007 they came to Somerford as a trusted adviser with a requirement for a unified, scalable management tool for their cloud infrastructure, along with comprehensive support and robust disaster recovery capabilities.
Requirements
Needed a unified, scalable management tool for their cloud infrastructure, along with comprehensive support and robust disaster recovery capabilities. Somerford played a crucial role in driving the technical adoption of AWS infrastructure and HashiCorp Vault through successful professional services projects, including a successful enterprise container deployment.
Business Challenges
The multinational insurance company required a single scalable secrets management tool for their poly cloud estate, with full disaster recovery and follow-the-sun support. In addition, they required the software licence to be fulfilled via a cloud marketplace to meet their consolidated procurement strategy and CSP spend commitments.
With a modest platform team attempting to service 75+ application teams, the former was becoming a bottleneck and a barrier to innovation.
The company was also facing the challenge of a directory services migration, from on-premise Active Directory to Azure Active Directory.
Tool duplication across global IT estate
Moving from legacy infrastructure to cloud & microservices
Tool sprawl - replacing CA Tech
Solutions
AWS Marketplace provided a defined procurement route within a single platform that simplified the procurement process and provided multi-year cost savings.
HashiCorp Vault was procured through a simple process via AWS Marketplace
Using Vault’s AppRole functionality, and their automation tool of choice, Jenkins, the company was able to facilitate application team provisioning to both their AWS and Azure environments in a timely, secure and monitored fashion. And Terraform underpinned both the creation of this new Vault capability, as well as all the application teams’ work to date, and going forward.
